This turning point of the year, when day and night are in equal balance before yielding once again to the light, has been celebrated throughout human history and culture as the renewal of life on earth with the coming of spring.

The same energy that stirs nature herself from her sleep and calls the buds and shoots from the ground stokes the fire in the belly of the human animal and we are moved to consider anew our lives and purpose here on the planet.

Perhaps for you, as for me, life’s purpose is something of a holy grail .. an instinct or intuition that cannot quite be grasped, shining somewhere just out of reach amidst the fundamental confusion of our lives. And yet, particularly for “spiritual people”, there is an underlying expectation that we should know what this life thing’s all about by now, and if we don’t then we’re somehow falling short.

The energies of the Spring Equinox invite us to gently let go of the outdated beliefs and expectations that longer serve us and to make room for some new flowers to grow.

True Spirituality is not the zeal of certainty but a liberation into your own authentic experience – the way it really is for you. This is the journey to your own heart. It cannot be rushed or forced, it has its own sense of time and becomes possible only through the vulnerable process of gradually allowing more of yourself into your awareness and learning to accept and honour all that you are without exception, however broken, or messy or magnificent.

Make your own Being your temple; honour your authentic experience as the only truth, step off the well trodden path and immerse yourself in the ordinary, extraordinary mystery of being alive.

Mid Winter Healing

As the winter solstice approaches, we are deep in the restful, reflective winter energies that draw us down and inward, for renewal. Perhaps, like me, you are waking up and getting ready for work each day in the darkness. But at this time of year, waking in the darkness has a special significance.

At the winter solstice the sun reaches its furthest point in our sky. But here in the darkness of the shortest day, a new dawn is breaking. The cycle of the year begins anew on the journey to spring and the gradual return of sunlight.

Many cultures throughout human history, including some of the greatest religions in the world today, have celebrated the returning sun as a festival of renewal and rebirth.

Long before the arrival of Christianity in Britain, our Celtic ancestors celebrated the rebirth of the Sun King, carried through the dark autumn months across the starless sea in the womb of the universal mother, to walk again at her side until Midsummer’s Day when he is sacrificed once again to the eternal cycle of death and rebirth.

Mistletoe was cut from the sacred Oak trees as a symbol of life in the dark winter months and the Yule log was lit to banish the darkness and bring good luck for the coming year. The bringing of light is a response to the needs of the human animal in the dark seasons’ to illuminate the senses, invigorate the body and rekindle the spirit.

As healers, the more we can attune ourselves and our work to the natural flow of the energies of the seasons and lunar cycles, the more powerful the wind at our sails. More than this, the living meditation of tuning in to the natural environment will help to sensitise you to the natural rhythms and messages of your body which is itself the beginning, of the Great Work; your own sacred human healing journey of integration, acceptance and completeness.
